Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship 2023 canceled – the organiser focuses already on the 2024 event
The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship will be organised in 2024 for the next time – 2023 event canceled
The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship will not be experienced in summer 2023. The event organiser has decided to already focus on the 2024 event for ensuring even greater event and experience. “Our aim is to create the event as great as possible every time. Canceling the event is always a hard and unpleasant decision, but for making the event as good as possible, it is the wisest thing to do at the moment for ensuring the Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship in 2024 a spectacular event”, says Mari Karjalainen from the organising company WTF Productions.
In July 2022 the Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship gathered approximately 1700 people to Joensuu Market Square to witness how the best heavy metal knitters from around the world competed for the title. The event was also streamed worldwide and people from 11 countries were there to watch the event live via the Internet.
The 2022 title went to String Thing from the United Kingdom. Second awarded was a Scottish-Indian team Woolfumes and the 3rd place went to UniKorn from the United States. The live music of the Championship final was by local band from Joensuu, Systematic Sickness Kin, which made its comeback to stage after having a long break. The previous champions are GIGA BODY METAL from Japan (2019) and Resurrection of the Knitting Witch from The Netherlands (2021). During the years 2019-2022 there have been representatives of 14 different nationalities on the Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship stage and submissions have been sent from 15 countries.
Heavy Metal Knitting was launched in spring 2019 and the event held in July 2019 gained a massive worldwide attention with millions of media hits. Heavy Metal Knitting is about combining handcrafts and heavy metal music in a new way. In the Heavy Metal Knitting competition the contestants knit along heavy metal music somewhat like in air guitar but with needles and yarn as the instrument combining knitting and heavy metal attitude.
