Press release
Exactly one year after the launch of the first Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship
(The 2nd of April, 2020)
Joensuu, Finland

Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship 2020 is cancelled!
The event is postponed to 2021

We are very sad and frustrated to announce that the Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship 2020 will be cancelled.

Due to the sudden global epidemic of Covid-19, our team has made the decision to cancel the 2020 event and postpone the world championships to the year 2021. While the most critical period of the epidemic might be over in Finland during July, the disease situation might be different in the countries of our contestants. We cannot be sure that the virus would have passed by July, so the safest and the wisest thing to do was to move the event to 2021.

The application period to the 2020 competition ended in March, but is now extended to last until the end of the year 2020. All applications to the competition sent by March 31st will be considered for the 2021 event too.

This is sad news for the brand new organizer of the event: WTF Productions Ltd. (read that as Welcome to Finland Productions). The company got established in February 2020 by the original creators of the 2019 Heavy Metal Knitting event, their aim being in making Finland known of its oddities and organizing the Heavy Metal Knitting competitions.

Trying to maintain it’s operations during the year 2020 and 2021, the company has launched today a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo in order to ensure the future of Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships. In the campaign the company sells many different kind of Heavy Metal Knitting products and promotional packages for businesses and individuals. Heavy Metal Knitting is back!

The first ever Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships were held in July 2019. The competition returns in summer 2020 and has opened the entry period for the qualification round on the darkest day of Finnish winter. Applications are accepted until March 31st 2020.

In Heavy Metal Knitting the knitter takes the lead performer role of a metal band. The idea is simple – as the band plays metal music, the knitter knits and moshes with his needles and yarn around. Heavy Metal Knitting is about combining handicrafts and heavy metal music in a new and fresh way, resulting in awe inspiring performances.

The first ever Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships were introduced to the world in April 2019. It did not take too long from the media and people around the world to discover that something new and extraordinary was about to happen.

The first qualification round of the 2019 competition attracted 26 contestants from 13 countries from all around the globe – all aiming to win the very first title of the Heavy Metal Knitting World Champion. Finally 12 acts from 8 different countries made it to the finals and lit the live stage in the city of Joensuu, Finland.

The winner, and the first ever Heavy Metal Knitting World Champion was a 5 person group called GIGA BODY METAL from Japan. Crafts with Ellen from Denmark came in 2nd and 3rd place went to 9” Needles from the USA.

The 2020 Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship application period is open until the 31st of March. After the application period, a jury will elect 12 contestants to join the live event in Joensuu, Finland on the 15th and 16th of July. The grand final will take place on the 16th of July.

In the qualification round, the performer needs to make a one minute long heavy metal knitting video, using one of the three songs selected by the organizers of the competition.
